Abstract:

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipes are made from the copolymerization of monomer ethylene. HDPE piping was began to use in the safety-related water system at Catawba nuclear power plant in 1998. To date, the HDPE piping at Catawba nuclear power plant has performed well and has proven to be a more cost effective way to address the corrosion issues in the station’s service water piping than metal piping. In China, HDPE piping has also been firstly used in nuclear power plant in the year of 2016, and good economic benefits has achieved. HDPE piping hence become the first choice of the service water piping in nuclear services. In this way, ASME has developed a HDPE Roadmap to guide the safe use and develop the rules of HDPE piping in nuclear services. In this presentation, based on the HDPE Roadmap, the research status and main problems of HDPE pipes using in nuclear services were reviewed. The author’s work in this field was introduced finally.

About the speaker:

Dr. Huan Sheng Lai jointed the Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Technology at Sun Yat-Sen University in April 2019 under its “100 talents” program. He obtained the PHD degree from the School of Mechanical Engineering, Chung-Ang University in 2015. He continued to work as post-doctoral researcher at the university, investigating the creep damage, creep fracture, and life prediction of high temperature structures in the field of nuclear power plant. He research interests include high temperature fracture mechanics, and the structure integral and accelerated life prediction method of HDPE pipes using in nuclear power plants.
