Abstract:

Atomic nuclei are complicated quantum many-body system. To understand the underlying physics in nuclei, the essential knowledge is the understanding of nuclear force and nuclear model. Unfortunately, none of these two are exactly understood up to now. On the other hand, there are huge amount of nuclear data, including masses, levels, EM properties, alpha and beta decay half-lives. It is worth to know the uncertainties between these observed data and calculations within one model and one nuclear force. In this talk, I will introduce the nuclear shell model and its applications on light, medium, and heavy nuclei from Be to Np. Some preliminary results on the uncertainties of nuclear models will be presented. Systematic investigation on the uncertainty of shell model is helpful for nuclear astrophysics and reactor physics. The universe is a huge reactor, while many small reactors around the world provide electric power for us. Nuclear data is important for understand the nuclear synthesis in universe and physics in reactor.

After Fukushima accident, some types of accident tolerant fuel (ATF) are suggested to avoid such accidents. The handing of long lifetime nuclides in the spent fuel is important for China because many running and coming nuclear power plants. In this talk, I will present some neutronic study on ATFs and transmutation methods.

About the speaker:

Dr. Cenxi YUAN is now an associate professor at Sino-French Institute of Nuclear Engineering and Technology, Sun Yat-sen University. He obtained his bachelor and doctor degree (supervisor, Prof. Furong XU) from Peking University in 2006 and 2012, respectively. During his Ph.D., he stayed in the University of Tokyo (supervisor, Prof. Takaharu Otsuka and Toshio Suzuki) for 15 months through CSC program. Dr. YUAN has more than 40 peer-review publications, including 24 SCI indexed and 4 EI indexed.
