　　Nuclear energy offers an alternative option to fossil fuels to support the worldwide energy demand. However, the technologies of reactors operated today (essentially water-cooled reactors) may have to face challenges limiting the long term development of nuclear energy.

　　The Generation IV International Forum (GIF) initiative has led to reconsider some of the options adopted in the past and stimulated the investigation of new tracks for sustainable nuclear energy.

　　To better understand to what extent Generation IV reactors should be different, and to recognize their main characteristics, requires some basic knowledge in the fundamentals of nuclear reactor design. What is behind the terms “criticality”, “breeding”, “fast or thermal neutrons”? How to select the “ingredients” (coolant, moderator, neutron spectrum, fuel materials and composition)? And how to choose the ad hoc combinations to design nuclear reactors in line with Generation IV criteria, in particular sustainability, that is optimized use of natural uranium resources and minimization of nuclear wastes.

　　His expertise mainly covers thermal-hydraulics, design and operation of nuclear reactors, including the different families of reactors in particular the concepts of 4th generation.

　　He joined CEA in the development team of CATHARE. He was subsequently responsible, at national and international level, for several R&D projects in the areas of severe accidents (ASTEC) and nuclear fuel behavior (PLEIADES). He was then heavily involved in R&D programs devoted to 4th generation reactors.

　　Claude RENAULT teaches in a number of Universities and Engineer Schools in France and in international INSTN training sessions.

　　Claude RENAULT has been teaching at the Sino-French Institute of Nuclear energy (IFCEN) in China since 2014.
