Topic: Research on Instrumentation and Control Systems for Nuclear Power Plants
Speaker: Prof. Jing JIANG 姜晶教授 (University of Western Ontario, Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Engineering)
Time: 12:40 – 14:00, Friday October 12, 2018

Abstract:
This talk will give a brief examination the roles that Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Systems play in a nuclear power plant and explain how such systems are crucial to maintain system safety and operational performance of the plant. The interactions between I&C systems and other system components, e.g. reactor systems, heat-transport systems, or safety systems, are also examined. Different design philosophy and reliability enhancement techniques for I&C systems are explained through examples.
Several samples of research projects at the Nuclear Power Plant Control and Instrumentation Research Lab at the University of Western Ontario in Canada are presented, including reactor as well as the plant modeling, system performance monitoring, advanced data transmission technologies (wired/wireless networks), smart sensors, and various passive safety systems. Detailed coverage on a unique testing platform for I&C systems under various operating scenarios will also be made. To respond to accident conditions, some recent research progress on post-accident monitoring systems will also be explained.
The talk will also cover some of the latest developments in Canadian nuclear industries and the activities at the IAEA in the above areas.
